The success of a workshop highly depends on an intensive preparation which includes a clarification of context and an extended needs analysis. A workshop’s success is based on a close alignment between client and facilitator regarding workshop design, which leads to clear objectives and a well thought out agenda. Organisational tasks, as well as client communication and coordination in accordance with our client form part of our tasks.
When implementing a designed workshop, participants need to feel appreciated and actively included. Good time management, systemic questions, a stringent facilitation and a proper documentation of working results are important parts of the implementation, as well.
We usually provide a detailed documentation of results. In many cases, we also offer a follow-up call with the client. This includes proposals for follow-up measures that will ensure the sustainability and long-term impact of a workshop.
Internal or external facilitation?
In today’s business world, many meetings and workshops are facilitated by the project manager or team leader of an organisation. This can lead to role conflicts, if the manager is facilitator, decider and involved in the conflict at the same time. In this case, the manager needs to recognise which role he or she is playing at which time, which is very demanding.
Especially with long workshop sessions and/ or a large number of participants, the support of an external facilitator can be essential. Costs that arise for external facilitation will be put into perspective if one considers the lower time investment of managers and participants and by the valuable outcome of a workshop. In confrontational situations or conflict resolution workshops, the emotional distance of an external facilitator can even be seen as prerequisite for respectful and constructive collaboration.
