Virtual training

Virtual training reduces travel costs and travel time. This makes it attractive to many organisations. Moreover, remote participants or teams from different locations and in different time zones can simultaneously participate in virtual training sessions. Finally, training provided on a global scale can strengthen identification with the organization and the feeling of togetherness.

Online training call for a different training design than face-to-face training. They also require a facilitator who is confident in virtual space, using adequate methods and tools and enjoys the challenges and technical possibilities of virtual training.

Advantages of virtual training

Today’s working environment of internationally active companies is characterised by emails, phone calls, video conferences and web meetings.

Keep up with changing times and offer training and other development measures online.

Virtual training provides numerous advantages:

Major benefits of face-to-face training can be offered in virtual training: personal exchange between trainer and participants as well as exchange between participants. Small group work can be facilitated in break-out rooms, results can be shared in plenary. It is the trainer’s responsibility to design an optimal learning process which addresses, engages and motivates all participants.

Training duration in virtual space is shorter, with single sessions building upon each other. Each virtual training session takes between 60 and 120 minutes. Such short sessions can be integrated in participants’ work days more easily. As a series of regular training units which build on each other is created e.g. meeting once a week, group spirit and a feeling of togetherness can be achieved. Participants apply new insights and freshly acquired skills in their daily working routine between sessions, facilitating learning transfer. Participants can also reflect on their experiences or share relevant business cases in the ensuing training sessions with their peers.

Asynchronous and synchronous learning can be combined. Between the single training sessions, trainer and participants can exchange with each other, ask questions, intensify the learning process, advise each other and deepen their knowledge.

An interactive training design employs different media and a mix of training methods to engage participants in various ways (e.g. verbal contributions, comments via chat function, whiteboard activities, polls, small group work in break out rooms, screen sharing etc.).

If participants experience engaging facilitation techniques in virtual classrooms, they can use these for the optimization of their own virtual meetings. Their competence and confidence in handling online technology and tools increase, so that virtual collaboration becomes more natural and even fun.
